Fabulous Food Weekend

So needless to say this weekend has been a fabulous food weekend. If there’s one thing I love about Charleston most it is the amazing quality of food in town. Everything from tacos to steak is nothing but extraordinary. This weekend we had friends from Charlotte in town and they treated us (how incredibly nice of them) to Peninsula Grill on Saturday night. My husband and I have never been there so this was an experience for us both. Peninsula Grill is a restaurant that you must fully appreciate everything from the atmosphere to the food. You walk in to the dining room that is crispy with white linen and elegant, soft lighting. It has a very formal but comfortable feel to it. The servers are very knowledgeable about the food and wine as they navigate you on your culinary journey. I started with the Local Field Green Salad which had this to die for goat cheese fritter on top with a pecan vinaigrette dressing, a truly Southern salad. I chose to document our entrée choices to share. The first one on the left was my choice and a special of the night, a pan-seared grouper with hand rolled spinach gnocchi and squash. It was perfect. The grouper had a perfect crispy outside, yet was moist and flaky inside that was full of flavor from the sauce. The gnocchi was melt-in your mouth good. Top left is the other special of the evening, grilled wahoo filets topped with blue crab and sweet corn succotash. My husband describes the wahoo as flaky and juicy and the blue crab complimented it perfectly. The sweet corn succotash was light and sweet allowing the flavor of the fish to stand out. The pork chop was a “Berkshire” Pork Chop and my friend’s choice of the evening. It was tender and so incredibly juicy. The smokey bacon-cheddar grits and collards added just the right southern soul food taste.

Now, onto dessert. My favorite. That’s my husband and I all dolled up. Along with the heavenly coconut cake, which is legendary. If you love coconut cake as I do then this is the perfect place for you. It was creamy and moist without being gooey. The absolute balance of sweet and light. It was the superb ending to an extraordinary meal. I would highly recommend Peninsula Grill to anyone celebrating anything. Birthday, anniversary, promotion, Valentine’s Day, or the weekend. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming and complimented by the delicious food, it’s Charleston at it’s best.

Tonight, we decided to have a spur of the moment dinner downtown at one of our favorite places, Halls Chophouse. We sat in the bar area which is very welcoming and upbeat. We have dined here several times all with reservations so we decided to give their new bar menu a try.  As you can see below it is quite amazing. We started with, what we think are, the best Oysters Rockefeller in town. They are the exact balance of cheese, spinach, bread crumbs, and oyster. Bold flavor packed in a bit size appetizer. Then we went with the Halls Chophouse Burger, pictured on the bottom. Now mind you that is just half, I repeat HALF, of the burger. It was cooked medium and topped with cheddar cheese, onions, tomatoes and lettuce. The meat is ground up prime rib, filet mignon, and strip steak. Can you say WOW? I have never tasted a burger with so much bold flavor. Condiments would have ruined this ground meat perfection. Plated with a homemade pickle spear and parmesan truffle french fries I swear I had thought I had died and gone to burger heaven. And all for only $12!!! YES, $12. So to top it all off we had a Sol’s Shake. It’s Nocello liquor, Creama de Coco and Vanilla Bean Ice Cream. Light, creamy and just sweet enough to not put us in a food coma, it was the sweetest ending to a beautiful meal. If you’ve ever dined at Halls you know that it is like dining with the Hall family. Mr. Hall welcomed us at the door, stopped by our table several times to make sure our food was nothing but delicious, and even came outside to thank us for joining them as we left. Truly a welcoming spot to be at. I recommend this place to everyone. Even if it is for a low-key meal at the bar, expect nothing but the best when you dine at Halls.
